Magician Theme Parks

Paul Roberts Magic at The Crocky Trail.

As a magician who has spent decades enchanting audiences across the UK’s most cherished theme parks, I’ve had the extraordinary privilege of turning ordinary days into magical memories. From the clashing swords of medieval jousts to the roars of animatronic dinosaurs, my career as a magician has unfolded in the most vibrant, fantastical settings. Each park has its own unique history and charm, and I’ve been fortunate enough to be asked, to weave my magic into their stories. Below, I’ll take you through my journey as a magician at Camelot Theme Park, Lightwater Valley, Gulliver’s World, The Crocky Trail, and even into the future, the upcoming Greenwood, sharing the roles I played and the spellbinding moments that defined them.

Camelot Theme Park Magic (2000–2006)

Camelot Theme Park, tucked away in the rolling hills of Lancashire, was a magical kingdom of knights, wizards, and dragons that captured imaginations until its closure in 2012. From 2000 to 2006, I was a magician at the heart of this medieval wonderland, immersing myself in its fantastical world. Camelot wasn’t just a job—it was a stage where I honed my craft as a magician, learning to adapt my illusions to every corner of the park.

One of my proudest roles was performing in the Merlin Magic Shows, where I channelled the legendary wizard’s mystique with illusions that left audiences spellbound. As a magician, I loved crafting tricks that felt like they belonged in a world of sorcery, from vanishing acts to levitations. Before the park’s thrilling jousting tournaments, I took on the role of warm-up magician, engaging crowds with specially designed, sleight-of-hand tricks and witty banter to build excitement for the knights’ battles. Behind the scenes, I doubled as a sound technician, ensuring the park’s magical atmosphere resonated through every speaker—a role that taught me the importance of precision, a skill I carried into my other magical performances at trade shows, and other corporate events.

The Medieval Banquets were a highlight of my time at Camelot. As a magician, I roamed among diners, performing close-up magic that made goblets and coins vanish right under their noses. Some nights, I stepped into grander roles, presiding over the feast as the King, my magician’s charisma adding flair to the regal pomp. At other times, I thrilled guests as a fire-breathing magician, my daring act lighting up the hall with gasps and applause. I sometimes, also embraced darker roles, like the Evil Torturer act, where I blended magic with theatrical menace to create chilling yet family-friendly magical spectacles. My versatility as a magician even landed me a spot in a TV commercial for Camelot, where I brought the park’s enchantment to screens across the UK.

Camelot was where I learned to be a magician of many faces—performer, technician, and storyteller—each role deepening my love for the craft.

Magic At Lightwater Valley (2009–2014)

Nestled in the scenic countryside of North Yorkshire. Lightwater Valley is a beloved destination for thrill-seekers and families alike, known for rides like The Ultimate and its warm, welcoming vibe. From 2009 to 2014, I was a magician here, bringing my unique brand of enchantment to this dynamic park. As a magician, I thrived on creating moments that complemented the park’s adventurous spirit, turning every interaction into a chance to spark wonder.

Here my days often began as a meet-and-greet entertainer, where I greeted guests with card tricks and coin vanishes, setting a magical tone from the moment they arrived. As a queue entertainer, I transformed long waits into delightful interludes, performing close-up magic that kept spirits high—whether it was making a child’s toy reappear or pulling a scarf from thin air. On stage, I dazzled crowds as a close-up and stage magic performer, blending humour, mystery, and audience participation into shows that felt both grand and intimate. One of my favourite performances was the UV Show, where my magic glowed under blacklight, creating a surreal, otherworldly experience that left audiences mesmerised.

Halloween brought out a different side of my magician’s repertoire. As a Halloween performer and advisor, I used my skills to craft spooky surprises that thrilled without scaring younger guests too much—think ghostly illusions and playful jump-scares. My work as a magician also extended to the screen, as I starred in a TV commercial that showcased Lightwater Valley’s magic to a wider audience.

Lightwater Valley taught me the art of connecting with diverse crowds as a magician, ensuring every guest, from wide-eyed toddlers to skeptical teens, left with a smile and a story to tell.

Gulliver’s World Magician (2015–2019)

Gulliver’s World in Warrington is a colorful haven for families, bursting with whimsical attractions and a playful spirit. From 2015 to 2019, I was proud to be a magician in this vibrant park, spreading enchantment across its themed lands. As a magician, I found endless opportunities to surprise and delight, whether I was performing for a single family or a packed audience.

As a close-up and stage magic performer, I roamed the park, pulling rabbits from hats and making objects vanish in the blink of an eye. My role as a queue entertainer was equally rewarding, as I used quick tricks to turn tedious waits into moments of joy—a floating card here, a disappearing coin there. One of my most memorable experiences was performing in the Dinosaur Show, where I blended magic with prehistoric fun. As a magician, I made dinosaurs “come alive” through clever illusions, delighting kids who believed, just for a moment, that my magic was real. Halloween saw me transform into a scare actor, using my magician’s flair to create eerie yet family-friendly frights, like ghostly apparitions that vanished into thin air.

Gulliver’s World was a playground for my creativity as a magician, allowing me to experiment with themed performances that resonated with young adventurers and their families.

The Crocky Trail (2021–2025)

The Crocky Trail, an outdoor adventure park in Cheshire, is a rugged, hands-on paradise of rope bridges, slides, and muddy trails. Since 2021, I’ve been a magician here, bringing my craft to this unique setting through 2025. As a magician, I’ve embraced the challenge of performing in an open-air environment, where the magic feels raw and immediate.

As a close-up magician and a magical stage performer, I weave magic into the park’s quirky attractions, performing tricks for small groups by the river or larger shows for crowds gathered after a day of adventure. My illusions—whether it’s making a pebble disappear or pulling a scarf from a child’s ear—are tailored to the park’s playful, natural vibe. Being a magician at The Crocky Trail means adapting to the elements, from sunny afternoons to drizzly mornings, and finding ways to make every moment magical.

The Crocky Trail has reminded me that a magician’s greatest tool is imagination, capable of transforming even the simplest setting into a stage for wonder.

Magic coming soon to Greenwood (2025)

Looking ahead, I’m thrilled to join Greenwood in 2025, a park poised to blend adventure with immersive storytelling. As a magician, I’ll step into roles as a meet-and-greet entertainer and stage performer, bringing magic to life from the moment guests arrive. While Greenwood’s story is still taking shape, I’m eager to craft new experiences as a magician, drawing on my decades of entertaining at other theme parks.

Whether I’m welcoming families with a quick trick or commanding the stage with a show-stopping illusion, my goal as a magician remains unchanged: to create moments of awe that linger long after the day ends. I like to think of my self as a magical memory maker.

A Magician’s Journey

From the medieval courts of Camelot to the wild trails of The Crocky Trail, my career as a magician has been a magical odyssey through the UK’s theme parks. Each park has shaped me, teaching me new ways to share the art of magic with audiences of all ages. As a magician, I’ve learned that magic isn’t just about tricks—it’s about connection, wonder, and the joy of seeing someone believe in the impossible. I also use all the knowledge gained when performing as
